Iowa Layoff Resources
If you have been laid off in Iowa, these resources can help you apply for unemployment, understand layoff-notice protections, find health coverage, seek financial assistance, locate workforce services, and get reliable information about possible workplace problems.
Eligibility requirements vary by program. Use the links below to check current rules and apply through the responsible agency.
Unemployment Benefits and Filing
Iowa Unemployment Insurance may provide temporary income if you lost work through no fault of your own. File a weekly claim for every week you want benefits. Unless exempt, you must register for work and complete at least four reemployment activities each week, including at least three job applications. Record and certify those activities in IowaWORKS.

Layoff-Notice Protections
Iowa does not have a separate state mini-WARN law. Federal WARN may require 60 days of advance notice for certain large layoffs or plant closings. Iowa Rapid Response can connect affected workers with unemployment, reemployment, and training services, but it does not decide whether WARN was violated.
Health-Insurance Coverage
Losing job-based insurance usually creates a special enrollment opportunity. Compare HealthCare.gov coverage, Iowa Medicaid, and COBRA before choosing.

Food, Cash, Childcare, Utility, and Local Assistance
The Iowa HHS Services Portal is the main application point for Medicaid, SNAP food assistance, and the Family Investment Program. Child Care Assistance and LIHEAP energy help have their own program information. For rent, food, emergency bills, and other local help, 211 is a useful starting point.

Workplace Problems and Legal Help
Iowa DIAL accepts certain wage claims only when the wages became due less than one year ago, the amount owed is under $6,500, and the work was performed in Iowa. Overtime issues generally go to the U.S. Department of Labor. Iowa employment-discrimination complaints generally must be filed with the Iowa Office of Civil Rights within 300 days.
