 Maine Layoff Resources

If you have been laid off in Maine, these resources can help you apply for unemployment, understand layoff-notice protections, find health coverage, seek financial assistance, locate workforce services, and get reliable information about possible workplace problems.

Eligibility requirements vary by program. Use the links below to check current rules and apply through the responsible agency.

Unemployment Benefits and Filing

Maine Unemployment Insurance may provide temporary income if you lost work through no fault of your own. File a weekly certification for each week you want benefits. Unless exempt, you must have an active Maine JobLink account and complete at least one qualifying work-search activity each week. Keep records because work searches can be audited.

Layoff-Notice and Severance Protections

Maine has state protections in addition to federal WARN. A covered establishment generally has employed 100 or more people during the preceding 12 months. Covered closings or relocations generally require 90 days’ notice, and Maine law can also require severance pay after a covered closing or qualifying mass layoff. Eligible workers generally receive one week’s pay for each year and partial year worked, subject to statutory exceptions and eligibility rules. Maine’s law and federal WARN are different, so do not rely on headcount alone.

Health-Insurance Coverage

Losing job-based insurance usually creates a special enrollment opportunity. Compare CoverME.gov coverage, MaineCare, and COBRA before choosing.

Food, Cash, Childcare, Utility, and Local Assistance

My Maine Connection handles MaineCare, SNAP, TANF, and certain other benefits. Maine’s Child Care Affordability Program may help eligible families pay for care while a parent works, attends school, or participates in job training. HEAP may help with heating costs. For local food, housing, utility, and other emergency help, use 211 Maine.

Workforce and Reemployment Services

Maine CareerCenters provide no-cost employment and training services, including résumé help, career guidance, workshops, veteran services, computer access, and information about training assistance. Some training funds have eligibility requirements.

Workplace Problems and Legal Help

The Maine Department of Labor handles certain wage and worker-rights complaints. Maine employment-discrimination complaints generally must be filed with the Maine Human Rights Commission within 300 days of the alleged discrimination. Federal deadlines and requirements may also apply.
