If you have been laid off from work in Washington, D.C., these resources can help you apply for unemployment, find health coverage, seek financial assistance, locate workforce services, and get reliable information about possible workplace problems.

Unemployment Benefits and Filing

File a D.C. unemployment claim through DC Networks as soon as possible after losing work. Continue filing weekly certifications, report work and earnings, and follow the work-search requirements that apply to your claim.

Layoff-Notice Protections

D.C. does not have a general mini-WARN law replacing federal WARN. Federal WARN may require 60 days of notice for certain large layoffs and plant closings. The Department of Employment Services receives WARN notices and provides Rapid Response and reemployment assistance.

Health-Insurance Coverage

Losing job-based insurance usually creates a special enrollment opportunity. Compare DC Health Link, D.C. Medicaid, and COBRA before deciding. Plan costs, provider networks, prescription coverage, and deadlines may differ.

Food, Cash, Childcare, Utility, and Local Assistance

District Direct is the main portal for programs including SNAP, Medicaid, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Childcare and energy assistance have separate program pages. Workplace Problems and Legal Help

D.C. wage complaints may fall under the Office of Wage-Hour Compliance or other District worker-protection enforcement. The D.C. Office of Human Rights accepts employment-discrimination complaints under laws it enforces. D.C. has broader local protections than federal law in several areas, so use the local process as well as checking federal rights.
