Eligibility varies by program, so use the official links below for current rules and applications.
Unemployment Benefits and Filing
South Dakota Reemployment Assistance may provide temporary income if you lost work through no fault of your own. File a weekly request for every week you want benefits and report all work and earnings. Unless exempt, complete at least two work-search activities each week and report the required job-contact information with your weekly request.

Layoff-Notice Protections
South Dakota does not have a separate state mini-WARN law that expands federal thresholds. Federal WARN may require 60 days’ advance notice for certain large layoffs or plant closings. South Dakota Rapid Response can provide reemployment and training help.
Health-Insurance Coverage
Losing job-based insurance usually creates a special enrollment opportunity. Compare HealthCare.gov coverage, South Dakota Medicaid, and COBRA before choosing.
Food, Cash, Childcare, Utility, and Local Assistance
South Dakota DSS administers SNAP, Medicaid, childcare assistance, and other programs. Energy assistance has additional program rules. For local food, housing, utility, and emergency help, use Helpline Center 211.

Workplace Problems and Legal Help
South Dakota DLR handles certain unpaid-wage and state wage-law claims. Whether you quit or are fired, wages and compensation generally must be paid by the next regular payday for those hours, or as soon afterward as you return employer property. State employment-discrimination charges generally must be filed within 180 days.
